Gregor,incontrast,hadbecomemuchcalmer.Sotheycouldn’tunderstandhiswordsanymore,althoughtheyseemedclearenoughtohim,clearerthanbefore—perhapshisearshadbecomeusedtothesound.Theyhadrealised,though,thattherewassomethingwrongwithhim,andwerereadytohelp.Thefirstresponsetohissituationhadbeenconfidentandwise,andthatmadehimfeelbetter.Hefeltthathehadbeendrawnbackinamongpeople,andfromthedoctorandthelocksmithheexpectedgreatandsurprisingachievements—althoughhedidnotreallydistinguishonefromtheother.
