Theywalkedthewholenightandallthenextdaytoofrommorningtillevening,buttheydidnotgetoutoftheforest,andwereveryhungry,fortheyhadnothingtoeatbuttwoorthreeberries,whichgrewontheground. Andastheyweresowearythattheirlegswouldcarrythemnolonger,theylaydownbeneathatreeandfellasleep.
Itwasnowthreemorningssincetheyhadlefttheirfather’shouse.Theybegantowalkagain,buttheyalwaysgotdeeperintotheforest,andifhelpdidnotcomesoon,theymustdieofhungerandweariness. Whenitwasmid-day,theysawabeautifulsnow-whitebirdsittingonabough,whichsangsodelightfullythattheystoodstillandlistenedtoit.Andwhenithadfinisheditssong,itspreaditswingsandflewawaybeforethem,andtheyfollowedituntiltheyreachedalittlehouse,ontheroofofwhichitalighted;andwhentheycamequiteuptolittlehousetheysawthatitwasbuiltofbreadandcoveredwithcakes,butthatthewindowswereofclearsugar.
