Ганзель и Гретель

           Hansel,however,hadnotbeenlookingbackatthecat,buthadbeenconstantlythrowingoneofthewhitepebble-stonesoutofhispocketontheroad. 

           Whentheyhadreachedthemiddleoftheforest,thefathersaid, "Now,children,pileupsomewood,andIwilllightafirethatyoumaynotbecold." HanselandGrethelgatheredbrushwoodtogether,ashighasalittlehill.Thebrushwoodwaslighted,andwhentheflameswereburningveryhigh,thewomansaid, "Now,children,layyourselvesdownbythefireandrest,wewillgointotheforestandcutsomewood.Whenwehavedone,wewillcomebackandfetchyouaway." 

           HanselandGrethelsatbythefire,andwhennooncame,eachatealittlepieceofbread,andastheyheardthestrokesofthewood-axetheybelievedthattheirfatherwasnear. Itwasnot,however,theaxe,itwasabranchwhichhehadfastenedtoawitheredtreewhichthewindwasblowingbackwardsandforwards. Andastheyhadbeensittingsuchalongtime,theireyesshutwithfatigue,andtheyfellfastasleep. Whenatlasttheyawoke,itwasalreadydarknight.Grethelbegantocryandsaid, "Howarewetogetoutoftheforestnow?" ButHanselcomfortedherandsaid, "Justwaitalittle,untilthemoonhasrisen,andthenwewillsoonfindtheway." Andwhenthefullmoonhadrisen,Hanseltookhislittlesisterbythehand,andfollowedthepebbleswhichshonelikenewly-coinedsilverpieces,andshowedthemtheway. 

           Theywalkedthewholenightlong,andbybreakofdaycameoncemoretotheirfather’shouse.
