Despitethecloudlesssky,theoldtreesaheadcastdeep,dark,coolshadows,anditwasafewsecondsbeforeHarry’seyesdiscernedthebuildinghalf-hiddenamongstthetangleoftrunks.Itseemedtohimaverystrangelocationtochooseforahouse,orelseanodddecisiontoleavethetreesgrowingnearby,blockingalllightandtheviewofthevalleybelow.Hewonderedwhetheritwasinhabited;itswallsweremossyandsomanytileshadfallenofftheroofthattherafterswerevisibleinplaces.Nettlesgrewallaroundit,theirtipsreachingthewindows,whichweretinyandthickwithgrime.Justashehadconcludedthatnobodycouldpossiblylivethere,however,oneofthewindowswasthrownopenwithaclatter,andathintrickleofsteamorsmokeissuedfromit,asthoughsomebodywascooking.
Ogdenmovedforwardquietlyand,itseemedtoHarry,rathercautiously.Asthedarkshadowsofthetreesslidoverhim,hestoppedagain,staringatthefrontdoor,towhichsomebodyhadnailedadeadsnake.
Thentherewasarustleandacrack,andamaninragsdroppedfromthenearesttree,landingonhisfeetrightinfrontofOgden,wholeaptbackwardsofasthestoodonthetailsofhisfrockcoatandstumbled.

Themanstandingbeforethemhadthickhairsomattedwithdirtitcouldhavebeenanycolor.Severalofhisteethweremissing.Hiseyesweresmallanddarkandstaredinoppositedirections.
