Snapesteppedforward,wavedhiswand,andthesnakevanishedinasmallpuffofblacksmoke. Snape,too,waslookingatHarryinanunexpectedway:Itwasashrewdandcalculatinglook,andHarrydidn’tlikeit.Hewasalsodimlyawareofanominousmutteringallaroundthewalls.Thenhefeltatuggingonthebackofhisrobes.

Ronsteeredhimoutofthehall,Hermionehurryingalongsidethem.Astheywentthroughthedoors,thepeopleoneithersidedrewawayasthoughtheywerefrightenedofcatchingsomething. Harrydidn’thaveacluewhatwasgoingon,andneitherRonnorHermioneexplainedanythinguntiltheyhaddraggedhimallthewayuptotheemptyGryffindorcommonroom.
