Theoldfamiliarblazeofhealthrushedoutfromhimandstruckherlikeablow. Itseemedtoenterintoherbodyandcoursethroughherveinsinaliquidglow,andtosetherquiveringwithitsimpartedstrength. Heflushedwarmlyashetookherhandandlookedintoherblueeyes,butthefreshbronzeofeightmonthsofsunhidtheflush,thoughitdidnotprotecttheneckfromthegnawingchafeofthestiffcollar. Shenotedtheredlineofitwithamusementwhichquicklyvanishedassheglancedathisclothes. Theyreallyfittedhim,—itwashisfirstmade-to-ordersuit,—andheseemedslimmerandbettermodelled. Inaddition,hisclothcaphadbeenreplacedbyasofthat,whichshecommandedhimtoputonandthencomplimentedhimonhisappearance. Shedidnotrememberwhenshehadfeltsohappy. Thischangeinhimwasherhandiwork,andshewasproudofitandfiredwithambitionfurthertohelphim.
Butthemostradicalchangeofall,andtheonethatpleasedhermost,wasthechangeinhisspeech. Notonlydidhespeakmorecorrectly,buthespokemoreeasily,andthereweremanynewwordsinhisvocabulary. Whenhegrewexcitedorenthusiastic,however,hedroppedbackintotheoldslurringandthedroppingoffinalconsonants. Also,therewasanawkwardhesitancy,attimes,asheessayedthenewwordshehadlearned. Ontheotherhand,alongwithhiseaseofexpression,hedisplayedalightnessandfacetiousnessofthoughtthatdelightedher. Itwashisoldspiritofhumorandbadinagethathadmadehimafavoriteinhisownclass,butwhichhehadhithertobeenunabletouseinherpresencethroughlackofwordsandtraining. Hewasjustbeginningtoorientatehimselfandtofeelthathewasnotwhollyanintruder.
