Forthefirsttimeheheardofsocialism,anarchism,andsingletax,andlearnedthattherewerewarringsocialphilosophies. Heheardhundredsoftechnicalwordsthatwerenewtohim,belongingtofieldsofthoughtthathismeagrereadinghadnevertouchedupon. Becauseofthishecouldnotfollowtheargumentsclosely,andhecouldonlyguessatandsurmisetheideaswrappedupinsuchstrangeexpressions. Thentherewasablack-eyedrestaurantwaiterwhowasatheosophist,aunionbakerwhowasanagnostic,anoldmanwhobaffledallofthemwiththestrangephilosophythatwhatisisright, andanotheroldmanwhodiscoursedinterminablyaboutthecosmosandthefather-atomandthemother-atom.
MartinEden’sheadwasinastateofaddlementwhenhewentawayafterseveralhours,andhehurriedtothelibrarytolookupthedefinitionsofadozenunusualwords. Andwhenheleftthelibrary,hecarriedunderhisarmfourvolumes:MadamBlavatsky’s"SecretDoctrine,""ProgressandPoverty,""TheQuintessenceofSocialism,"and,"WarfareofReligionandScience." Unfortunately,hebeganonthe"SecretDoctrine." Everylinebristledwithmany-syllabledwordshedidnotunderstand. Hesatupinbed,andthedictionarywasinfrontofhimmoreoftenthanthebook. Helookedupsomanynewwordsthatwhentheyrecurred,hehadforgottentheirmeaningandhadtolookthemupagain. Hedevisedtheplanofwritingthedefinitionsinanote-book,andfilledpageafterpagewiththem. Andstillhecouldnotunderstand. Hereaduntilthreeinthemorning,andhisbrainwasinaturmoil,butnotoneessentialthoughtinthetexthadhegrasped.
