           Therehadbeennoquick,vigorouslip-pressuresuchasshouldaccompanyanykiss. Herswasthekissofatiredwomanwhohadbeentiredsolongthatshehadforgottenhowtokiss. Herememberedherasagirl,beforehermarriage,whenshewoulddancewiththebest,allnight,afterahardday’sworkatthelaundry,andthinknothingofleavingthedancetogotoanotherday’shardwork. AndthenhethoughtofRuthandthecoolsweetnessthatmustresideinherlipsasitresidedinallabouther. Herkisswouldbelikeherhand-shakeorthewayshelookedatone,firmandfrank. Inimaginationhedaredtothinkofherlipsonhis,andsovividlydidheimaginethathewentdizzyatthethoughtandseemedtoriftthroughcloudsofrose-petals,fillinghisbrainwiththeirperfume. 

           InthekitchenhefoundJim,theotherboarder,eatingmushverylanguidly,withasick,far-awaylookinhiseyes. Jimwasaplumber’sapprenticewhoseweakchinandhedonistictemperament,coupledwithacertainnervousstupidity,promisedtotakehimnowhereintheraceforbreadandbutter. 

           "Whydon’tyoueat?" hedemanded,asMartindippeddolefullyintothecold,half-cookedoatmealmush. "Wasyoudrunkagainlastnight?" 

           Martinshookhishead. Hewasoppressedbytheuttersqualidnessofitall. RuthMorseseemedfartherremovedthanever. 

           "Iwas,"Jimwentonwithaboastful,nervousgiggle. "Iwasloadedrighttotheneck. Oh,shewasadaisy. Billybroughtmehome."
