           TheonecriticintheUnitedStateshadpronouncedfavorablyonthepoem,whilehisowncontentionthatgoodstuffcouldfinditswayintothemagazineshadprovedcorrect. Butenthusiasmhadlostitsspringinhim,andhefoundthathewasmoreanxioustoseeBrissendenthanhewastocarrythegoodnews. TheacceptanceofTheParthenonhadrecalledtohimthatduringhisfivedays’devotionto"Overdue"hehadnotheardfromBrissendennoreventhoughtabouthim. ForthefirsttimeMartinrealizedthedazehehadbeenin,andhefeltshameforhavingforgottenhisfriend. Buteventheshamedidnotburnverysharply. Hewasnumbtoemotionsofanysortsavetheartisticonesconcernedinthewritingof"Overdue." Sofarasotheraffairswereconcerned,hehadbeeninatrance. Forthatmatter,hewasstillinatrance. Allthislifethroughwhichtheelectriccarwhirredseemedremoteandunreal,andhewouldhaveexperiencedlittleinterestandlessshockifthegreatstonesteepleofthechurchhepassedhadsuddenlycrumbledtomortar-dustuponhishead.

           "DidMr.Brissendenleaveanyaddress?"heaskedtheclerk,wholookedathimcuriouslyforamoment. 

           "Haven’tyouheard?"heasked. 

           Martinshookhishead. 

           "Why,thepaperswerefullofit. Hewasfounddeadinbed. Suicide. Shothimselfthroughthehead." "Isheburiedyet?"Martinseemedtohearhisvoice,likesomeoneelse’svoice,fromalongwayoff,askingthequestion.
