           Martinceasedabruptly,inadeadsilence. EverybodyinRuth’sfamilylookeduptoJudgeBlountasamanofpowerandachievement,andtheywerehorrifiedatMartin’soutbreak. Theremainderofthedinnerpassedlikeafuneral,thejudgeandMr.Morseconfiningtheirtalktoeachother,andtherestoftheconversationbeingextremelydesultory. Thenafterward,whenRuthandMartinwerealone,therewasascene. 

           "Youareunbearable,"shewept. 

           Buthisangerstillsmouldered,andhekeptmuttering,"Thebeasts! Thebeasts!" 

           Whensheaverredhehadinsultedthejudge,heretorted:- 

           "Bytellingthetruthabouthim?" 

           "Idon’tcarewhetheritwastrueornot,"sheinsisted. "Therearecertainboundsofdecency,andyouhadnolicensetoinsultanybody." 

           "ThenwheredidJudgeBlountgetthelicensetoassaulttruth?" Martindemanded. "Surelytoassaulttruthisamoreseriousmisdemeanorthantoinsultapygmypersonalitysuchasthejudge’s. Hedidworsethanthat. Heblackenedthenameofagreat,noblemanwhoisdead. Oh,thebeasts! Thebeasts!" 

           Hiscomplexangerflamedafresh,andRuthwasinterrorofhim. Neverhadsheseenhimsoangry,anditwasallmystifiedandunreasonabletohercomprehension. Andyet,throughherveryterrorranthefibresoffascinationthathaddrawnandthatstilldrewhertohimthathadcompelledhertoleantowardshim,and,inthatmad,culminatingmoment,layherhandsuponhisneck.
