           Hestaggeredalonglikeadrunkenman,murmuringferventlyaloud: "ByGod!ByGod!" 

           Apolicemanonastreetcornereyedhimsuspiciously,thennotedhissailorroll. 

           "Wheredidyougetit?"thepolicemandemanded. 

           MartinEdencamebacktoearth. Hiswasafluidorganism,swiftlyadjustable,capableofflowingintoandfillingallsortsofnooksandcrannies. Withthepoliceman’shailhewasimmediatelyhisordinaryself,graspingthesituationclearly. 

           "It’sabeaut,ain’tit?"helaughedback. "Ididn’tknowIwastalkin’outloud." 

           "You’llbesingingnext,"wasthepoliceman’sdiagnosis. 

           "No,Iwon’t. Gimmeamatchan’I’llcatchthenextcarhome." 

           Helightedhiscigarette,saidgoodnight,andwenton. "Nowwouldn’tthatrattleyou?"heejaculatedunderhisbreath. "ThatcopperthoughtIwasdrunk." Hesmiledtohimselfandmeditated. "IguessIwas,"headded; "butIdidn’tthinkawoman’sface’ddoit."
