           ThehourshespentwithRuthweretheonlyhappyoneshehad,andtheywerenotallhappy. Hewasafflictedalwayswithagnawingrestlessness,moretantalizingthanintheolddaysbeforehepossessedherlove; fornowthathedidpossessherlove,thepossessionofherwasfarawayasever. Hehadaskedfortwoyears;timewasflying,andhewasachievingnothing. Again,hewasalwaysconsciousofthefactthatshedidnotapprovewhathewasdoing. Shedidnotsaysodirectly. Yetindirectlyshelethimunderstanditasclearlyanddefinitelyasshecouldhavespokenit. Itwasnotresentmentwithher,butdisapproval; thoughlesssweet-naturedwomenmighthaveresentedwhereshewasnomorethandisappointed. Herdisappointmentlayinthatthismanshehadtakentomould,refusedtobemoulded. Toacertainextentshehadfoundhisclayplastic,thenithaddevelopedstubbornness,decliningtobeshapedintheimageofherfatherorofMr.Butler. 

           Whatwasgreatandstronginhim,shemissed,or,worseyet,misunderstood. Thisman,whoseclaywassoplasticthathecouldliveinanynumberofpigeonholesofhumanexistence,shethoughtwilfulandmostobstinatebecauseshecouldnotshapehimtoliveinherpigeonhole,whichwastheonlyonesheknew. Shecouldnotfollowtheflightsofhismind,andwhenhisbraingotbeyondher,shedeemedhimerratic. Nobodyelse’sbrainevergotbeyondher. Shecouldalwaysfollowherfatherandmother,herbrothersandOlney; wherefore,whenshecouldnotfollowMartin,shebelievedthefaultlaywithhim. Itwastheoldtragedyofinsularitytryingtoserveasmentortotheuniversal.
