           Heknewfullwell,fromhisSpencer,thatmancanneverattainultimateknowledgeofanything,andthatthemysteryofbeautywasnolessthanthatoflifenay,morethatthefibresofbeautyandlifewereintertwisted,andthathehimselfwasbutabitofthesamenonunderstandablefabric,twistedofsunshineandstar-dustandwonder. 

           Infact,itwaswhenfilledwiththesethoughtsthathewrotehisessayentitled"Star-dust,"inwhichhehadhisfling,notattheprinciplesofcriticism,butattheprincipalcritics. Itwasbrilliant,deep,philosophical,anddeliciouslytouchedwithlaughter. Alsoitwaspromptlyrejectedbythemagazinesasoftenasitwassubmitted. Buthavingclearedhismindofit,hewentserenelyonhisway. Itwasahabithedeveloped,ofincubatingandmaturinghisthoughtuponasubject,andofthenrushingintothetype-writerwithit. Thatitdidnotseeprintwasamatterofsmallmomentwithhim. Thewritingofitwastheculminatingactofalongmentalprocess,thedrawingtogetherofscatteredthreadsofthoughtandthefinalgeneralizinguponallthedatawithwhichhismindwasburdened. Towritesuchanarticlewastheconsciouseffortbywhichhefreedhismindandmadeitreadyforfreshmaterialandproblems. Itwasinawayakintothatcommonhabitofmenandwomentroubledbyrealorfanciedgrievances,whoperiodicallyandvolublybreaktheirlong-sufferingsilenceand"havetheirsay"tillthelastwordissaid.
