           Asmallclosetcontainedhisclothesandthebookshehadaccumulatedandforwhichtherewasnoroomonthetableorunderthetable. Handinhandwithreading,hehaddevelopedthehabitofmakingnotes,andsocopiouslydidhemakethemthattherewouldhavebeennoexistenceforhimintheconfinedquartershadhenotriggedseveralclothes-linesacrosstheroomonwhichthenoteswerehung. Evenso,hewascrowdeduntilnavigatingtheroomwasadifficulttask. Hecouldnotopenthedoorwithoutfirstclosingtheclosetdoor,andviceversa. Itwasimpossibleforhimanywheretotraversetheroominastraightline. Togofromthedoortotheheadofthebedwasazigzagcoursethathewasneverquiteabletoaccomplishinthedarkwithoutcollisions. Havingsettledthedifficultyoftheconflictingdoors,hehadtosteersharplytotherighttoavoidthekitchen. Next,hesheeredtotheleft,toescapethefootofthebed; butthissheer,iftoogenerous,broughthimagainstthecornerofthetable. Withasuddentwitchandlurch,heterminatedthesheerandboreofftotherightalongasortofcanal,onebankofwhichwasthebed,theotherthetable. Whentheonechairintheroomwasatitsusualplacebeforethetable,thecanalwasunnavigable. Whenthechairwasnotinuse,itreposedontopofthebed,thoughsometimeshesatonthechairwhencooking,readingabookwhilethewaterboiled,andevenbecomingskilfulenoughtomanageaparagraphortwowhilesteakwasfrying. Also,sosmallwasthelittlecornerthatconstitutedthekitchen,hewasable,sittingdown,toreachanythingheneeded. Infact,itwasexpedienttocooksittingdown; standingup,hewastooofteninhisownway.
