           Thenextdayandthenext,dayswithoutend,witnessedtheafternoonfight. Whenheputuphisarms,eachday,tobegin,theypainedexquisitely,andthefirstfewblows,struckandreceived,rackedhissoul; afterthatthingsgrewnumb,andhefoughtonblindly,seeingasinadream,dancingandwavering,thelargefeaturesandburning,animal-likeeyesofCheese-Face. Heconcentrateduponthatface; allelseabouthimwasawhirlingvoid. Therewasnothingelseintheworldbutthatface,andhewouldneverknowrest,blessedrest,untilhehadbeatenthatfaceintoapulpwithhisbleedingknuckles,oruntilthebleedingknucklesthatsomehowbelongedtothatfacehadbeatenhimintoapulp. Andthen,onewayortheother,hewouldhaverest. Buttoquit,forhim,Martin,toquit,thatwasimpossible! 

           CamethedaywhenhedraggedhimselfintotheEnquireralley,andtherewasnoCheese-Face. NordidCheese-Facecome. Theboyscongratulatedhim,andtoldhimthathehadlickedCheese-Face. ButMartinwasnotsatisfied. HehadnotlickedCheese-Face,norhadCheese-Facelickedhim. Theproblemhadnotbeensolved. ItwasnotuntilafterwardthattheylearnedthatCheese-Face’sfatherhaddiedsuddenlythatveryday. 

           MartinskippedonthroughtheyearstothenightintheniggerheavenattheAuditorium. Hewasseventeenandjustbackfromsea. Arowstarted. Somebodywasbullyingsomebody,andMartininterfered,tobeconfrontedbyCheese-Face’sblazingeyes. 

           "I’llfixyouafterdeshow,"hisancientenemyhissed. 

           Martinnodded. Thenigger-heavenbouncerwasmakinghiswaytowardthedisturbance.
