           "Itisbeautiful,"sherepeated,withemphasis,afterapause. Ofcourseitwasbeautiful; buttherewassomethingmorethanmerebeautyinit,somethingmorestinginglysplendidwhichhadmadebeautyitshandmaiden. Hesprawledsilentlyontheground,watchingthegrislyformofagreatdoubtrisingbeforehim. Hehadfailed. Hewasinarticulate. Hehadseenoneofthegreatestthingsintheworld,andhehadnotexpressedit. 

           "Whatdidyouthinkofthe"Hehesitated,abashedathisfirstattempttouseastrangeword."Ofthemotif?"heasked. 

           "Itwasconfused,"sheanswered. "Thatismyonlycriticisminthelargeway. Ifollowedthestory,butthereseemedsomuchelse. Itistoowordy. Youclogtheactionbyintroducingsomuchextraneousmaterial." 

           "Thatwasthemajormotif,"hehurriedlyexplained,"thebigunderrunningmotif,thecosmicanduniversalthing. Itriedtomakeitkeeptimewiththestoryitself,whichwasonlysuperficialafterall. Iwasontherightscent,butIguessIdiditbadly. IdidnotsucceedinsuggestingwhatIwasdrivingat. ButI’lllearnintime." 

           Shedidnotfollowhim. Shewasabachelorofarts,buthehadgonebeyondherlimitations. Thisshedidnotcomprehend,attributingherincomprehensiontohisincoherence.

           Heheardhervoiceasfromfaroff,forhewasdebatingwhetherhewouldreadherthe"SeaLyrics." Helayindulldespair,whileshewatchedhimsearchingly,ponderingagainuponunsummonedandwaywardthoughtsofmarriage.
