Hewouldstandup,withopeneyes,andhewouldstruggleandtoilandlearnuntil,witheyesunblindedandtongueuntied,hecouldsharewithherhisvisionedwealth. Othermenhaddiscoveredthetrickofexpression,ofmakingwordsobedientservitors,andofmakingcombinationsofwordsmeanmorethanthesumoftheirseparatemeanings. Hewasstirredprofoundlybythepassingglimpseatthesecret,andhewasagaincaughtupinthevisionofsunlitspacesandstarryvoids—untilitcametohimthatitwasveryquiet,andhesawRuthregardinghimwithanamusedexpressionandasmileinhereyes.
"Ihavehadagreatvisioning,"hesaid,andatthesoundofhiswordsinhisownearshisheartgavealeap. Wherehadthosewordscomefrom? Theyhadadequatelyexpressedthepausehisvisionhadputintheconversation. Itwasamiracle. Neverhadhesoloftilyframedaloftythought. Butneverhadheattemptedtoframeloftythoughtsinwords. Thatwasit. Thatexplainedit. Hehadnevertried. ButSwinburnehad,andTennyson,andKipling,andalltheotherpoets. Hismindflashedontohis"Pearl-diving." Hehadneverdaredthebigthings,thespiritofthebeautythatwasafireinhim. Thatarticlewouldbeadifferentthingwhenhewasdonewithit. Hewasappalledbythevastnessofthebeautythatrightfullybelongedinit,andagainhismindflashedanddared,andhedemandedofhimselfwhyhecouldnotchantthatbeautyinnobleverseasthegreatpoetsdid. AndtherewasallthemysteriousdelightandspiritualwonderofhisloveforRuth. Whycouldhenotchantthat,too,asthepoetsdid? Theyhadsungoflove. Sowouldhe. ByGod!
