           Itwasperfectlystillandpresentlythemoongrewbright;ifyouhadbeenthereyouwouldhaveseenthemoonlightshiningonanoldtree-stumpandonafairsizedboulder.Butifyouhadgoneonlookingyouwouldgraduallyhavebeguntothinktherewassomethingoddaboutboththestumpandtheboulder.Andnextyouwouldhavethoughtthatthestumpdidlookreallyremarkablylikealittlefatmancrouchingontheground.Andifyouhadwatchedlongenoughyouwouldhaveseenthestumpwalkacrosstotheboulderandthebouldersitupandbegintalkingtothestump;forinrealitythestumpandtheboulderweresimplytheWitchandthedwarf.Foritwaspartofhermagicthatshecouldmakethingslooklikewhattheyaren’t,andshehadthepresenceofmindtodosoattheverymomentwhentheknifewasknockedoutofherhand.Shehadkeptholdofherwand,soithadbeenkeptsafe,too.

           Whentheotherchildrenwokeupnextmorning(theyhadbeensleepingonpilesofcushionsinthepavilion)thefirstthingtheyheard-fromMrsBeaver-wasthattheirbrotherhadbeenrescuedandbroughtintocamplatelastnight;andwasatthatmomentwithAslan.Assoonastheyhadbreakfasted4theyallwentout,andtheretheysawAslanandEdmundwalkingtogetherinthedewygrass,apartfromtherestofthecourt.Thereisnoneedtotellyou(andnooneeverheard)whatAslanwassaying,butitwasaconversationwhichEdmundneverforgot.AstheothersdrewnearerAslanturnedtomeetthem,bringingEdmundwithhim.
