Theyhadalsosomefinesportingexcursions,whichweremadeduringthefrostinthevastTadornMarsh.GideonSpilettandHerbert,aidedbyJupandTop,didnotmissashotinthemidstofmyriadsofwild-duck,snipe,teal,andothers.Theaccesstothesehunting-groundswaseasy;besides,whethertheyreachedthembytheroadtoPortBalloon,afterhavingpassedtheMercyBridge,orbyturningtherocksfromFlotsamPoint,thehunterswereneverdistantfromGraniteHousemorethantwoorthreemiles.
Thuspassedthefourwintermonths,whichwerereallyrigorous,thatistosay,June,July,August,andSeptember.But,inshort,GraniteHousedidnotsuffermuchfromtheinclemencyoftheweather,anditwasthesamewiththecorral,which,lessexposedthantheplateau,andshelteredpartlybyMountFranklin,onlyreceivedtheremainsofthehurricanes,alreadybrokenbytheforestsandthehighrocksoftheshore.
