           Thestrugglewasshort.Thestrangerpossessedimmensestrengthandactivity.Heseizedthejaguar’sthroatwithonepowerfulhand,holdingitasinavise,withoutheedingthebeast’sclawswhichtorehisflesh,andwiththeotherheplungedhisknifeintoitsheart.

           Thejaguarfell.Thestrangerkickedawaythebody,andwasabouttoflyatthemomentwhenthesettlersarrivedonthefieldofbattle,butHerbert,clingingtohim,cried,—

           "No,no!youshallnotgo!"

           Hardingadvancedtowardsthestranger,whofrownedwhenhesawhimapproaching.Thebloodflowedfromhisshoulderunderhistornshirt,buthetooknonoticeofit.

           "Myfriend,"saidCyrusHarding,"wehavejustcontractedadebtofgratitudetoyou.Tosaveourboyyouhaveriskedyourlife!"
