           Theengineerthenapproached,andfoundthatthesidesoftheopening,initsupperpartatleast,hadnotaslopeofmorethanfromthirtytothirty-fivedegrees.Itwasthereforepracticable,and,providedthatthedeclivitydidnotincrease,itwouldbeeasytodescendeventothelevelofthesea.Ifthen,aswasprobable,somevastcavityexistedintheinteriorofthegranite,itmight,perhaps,beofgreatuse.

           "Well,captain,whatarewestoppingfor?"askedthesailor,impatienttoenterthenarrowpassage.
