Abouttwelve,immenseshoalsofseaweedscameinsight.Iwasawareofthegreatpowersofvegetationthatcharacterisetheseplants,whichgrowatadepthoftwelvethousandfeet,reproducethemselvesunderapressureoffourhundredatmospheres,andsometimesformbarriersstrongenoughtoimpedethecourseofaship.Butnever,Ithink,weresuchseaweedsasthosewhichwesawfloatinginimmensewavinglinesupontheseaofLiedenbrock.
Ourraftskirtedthewholelengthofthefuci,threeorfourthousandfeetlong,undulatinglikevastserpentsbeyondthereachofsight;Ifoundsomeamusementintracingtheseendlesswaves,alwaysthinkingIshouldcometotheendofthem,andforhoursmypatiencewasvyingwithmysurprise.
Whatnaturalforcecouldhaveproducedsuchplants,andwhatmusthavebeentheappearanceoftheearthinthefirstagesofitsformation,when,undertheactionofheatandmoisture,thevegetablekingdomalonewasdevelopingonitssurface?
Eveningcame,and,asonthepreviousday,Iperceivednochangeintheluminousconditionoftheair.Itwasaconstantcondition,thepermanencyofwhichmightbereliedupon.
