Thiswasmorethanthehungryanimalscouldbear. Withoneaccord,thoughnothingofthekindhadbeenplannedbeforehand,theyflungthemselvesupontheirtormentors. Jonesandhismensuddenlyfoundthemselvesbeingbuttedandkickedfromallsides. Thesituationwasquiteoutoftheircontrol. Theyhadneverseenanimalsbehavelikethisbefore,andthissuddenuprisingofcreatureswhomtheywereusedtothrashingandmaltreatingjustastheychose,frightenedthemalmostoutoftheirwits. Afteronlyamomentortwotheygaveuptryingtodefendthemselvesandtooktotheirheels. Aminutelaterallfiveofthemwereinfullflightdownthecart-trackthatledtothemainroad,withtheanimalspursuingthemintriumph.
Mrs.Joneslookedoutofthebedroomwindow,sawwhatwashappening,hurriedlyflungafewpossessionsintoacarpetbag,andslippedoutofthefarmbyanotherway. Mosessprangoffhisperchandflappedafterher,croakingloudly.
