GreatestofallthemansionsoftheDwarveswasKhazaddum,theDwarrowdelf,HadhodrondintheElvishtongue,thatwasafterwardsinthedaysofitsdarknesscalledMoria;butitwasfaroffintheMountainsofMistbeyondthewideleaguesofEriador,andtotheEldarcamebutasanameandarumourfromthewordsoftheDwarvesoftheBlueMountains.
FromNogrodandBelegosttheNaugrimcameforthintoBeleriand;andtheElveswerefilledwithamazement,fortheyhadbelievedthemselvestobetheonlylivingthingsinMiddle-earththatspokewithwordsorwroughtwithhands,andthatallotherswerebutbirdsandbeasts.ButtheycouldunderstandnowordofthetongueoftheNaugrim,whichtotheirearswascumbrousandunlovely;andfeweveroftheEldarhaveachievedthemasteryofitButtheDwarveswereswifttolearn,andindeedweremorewillingtolearntheElventonguethantoteachtheirowntothoseofalienrace.FewoftheEldarwentevertoNogrodandBelegost,saveEolofNanElmothandMaeglinhisson;buttheDwarvestraffickedintoBeleriand,andtheymadeagreatroadthatpassedundertheshouldersofMountDolmedandfollowedthecourseoftheRiverAscar,crossingGelionatSarnAthrad,theFordofStones,wherebattleafterbefell.
EvercoolwasthefriendshipbetweentheNaugrimandtheEldar,thoughmuchprofittheyhadoneoftheother;butatthattimethosegriefsthatlaybetweenthemhadnotyetcometopass,andKingThingolwelcomedthem.ButtheNaugrimgavetheirfriendshipmorereadilytotheNoldorinafterdaysthantoanyothersofElvesandMen,becauseoftheirloveandreverenceforAule;andthegemsoftheNoldortheypraisedaboveallotherwealth.InthedarknessofArdaalreadytheDwarveswroughtgreatworks,forevenfromthefirstdaysoftheirFatherstheyhadmarvellousskillwithmetalsandwithstone;butinthatancienttimeironandcoppertheylovedtowork,ratherthansilverorgold.
