Buda-Pesthseemsawonderfulplace,fromtheglimpsewhichIgotofitfromthetrainandthelittleIcouldwalkthroughthestreets.Ifearedtogoveryfarfromthestation,aswehadarrivedlateandwouldstartasnearthecorrecttimeaspossible.
TheimpressionIhadwasthatwewereleavingtheWestandenteringtheEast; themostwesternofsplendidbridgesovertheDanube,whichishereofnoblewidthanddepth,tookusamongthetraditionsofTurkishrule.
Weleftinprettygoodtime,andcameafternightfalltoKlausenburgh. HereIstoppedforthenightattheHotelRoyale. Ihadfordinner,orrathersupper,achickendoneupsomewaywithredpepper,whichwasverygoodbutthirsty. (Mem.getrecipeforMina.) Iaskedthewaiter,andhesaiditwascalled"paprikahendl,"andthat,asitwasanationaldish,IshouldbeabletogetitanywherealongtheCarpathians.
IfoundmysmatteringofGermanveryusefulhere,indeed,Idon’tknowhowIshouldbeabletogetonwithoutit.
HavinghadsometimeatmydisposalwheninLondon,IhadvisitedtheBritishMuseum,andmadesearchamongthebooksandmapsinthelibraryregardingTransylvania; ithadstruckmethatsomeforeknowledgeofthecountrycouldhardlyfailtohavesomeimportanceindealingwithanoblemanofthatcountry.
Ifindthatthedistricthenamedisintheextremeeastofthecountry,justonthebordersofthreestates,Transylvania,Moldavia,andBukovina,inthemidstoftheCarpathianmountains; oneofthewildestandleastknownportionsofEurope.
