           Thehallwasnotdark,noryetwasitlit,onlybythehigh-hungbronzelamp;awarmglowsuffusedbothitandthelowerstepsoftheoakstaircase. Thisruddyshineissuedfromthegreatdining-room,whosetwo-leaveddoorstoodopen,andshowedagenialfireinthegrate,glancingonmarblehearthandbrassfire-irons,andrevealingpurpledraperiesandpolishedfurniture,inthemostpleasantradiance.Itrevealed,too,agroupnearthemantelpiece: Ihadscarcelycaughtit,andscarcelybecomeawareofacheerfulminglingofvoices,amongstwhichIseemedtodistinguishthetonesofAdele,whenthedoorclosed.
