           Wehadmerelystruck,atrandom,alimitedpartofsomethingofincalculableextent. Thefoothillsweremoresparselysprinkledwithgrotesquestonestructures,linkingtheterriblecitytothealreadyfamiliarcubesandrampartswhichevidentlyformeditsmountainoutposts. Theselatter,aswellasthequeercavemouths,wereasthickontheinnerasontheoutersidesofthemountains. 

           Thenamelessstonelabyrinthconsisted,forthemostpart,ofwallsfromtentoonehundredandfiftyfeetinice-clearheight,andofathicknessvaryingfromfivetotenfeet. Itwascomposedmostlyofprodigiousblocksofdarkprimordialslate,schist,andsandstoneblocksinmanycasesaslargeas4x6x8feetthoughinseveralplacesitseemedtobecarvedoutofasolid,unevenbedrockofpreCambrianslate. Thebuildingswerefarfromequalinsize,therebeinginnumerablehoneycombarrangementsofenormousextentaswellassmallerseparatestructures. Thegeneralshapeofthesethingstendedtobeconical,pyramidal,orterraced;thoughthereweremanyperfectcylinders,perfectcubes,clustersofcubes,andotherrectangularforms,andapeculiarsprinklingofanglededificeswhosefive-pointedgroundplanroughlysuggestedmodernfortifications. Thebuildershadmadeconstantandexpertuseoftheprincipleofthearch,anddomeshadprobablyexistedinthecity’sheyday. 

           Thewholetanglewasmonstrouslyweathered,andtheglacialsurfacefromwhichthetowersprojectedwasstrewnwithfallenblocksandimmemorialdebris. Wheretheglaciationwastransparentwecouldseethelowerpartsofthegiganticpiles,andwenoticedtheice-preservedstonebridgeswhichconnectedthedifferenttowersatvaryingdistancesabovetheground.
