           TherewasnodeathrowatColdMountain,onlyEBlock,setapartfromtheotherfourandaboutaquartertheirsize,brickinsteadofwood,withahorriblebaremetalroofthatglaredinthesummersunlikeadeliriouseyeball.Sixcellsinside,threeoneachsideofawidecenteraisle,eachalmosttwiceasbigasthecellsintheotherfourblocks.Singles,too.Greataccommodationsforaprison(especiallyinthethirties),buttheinmateswouldhavetradedforcellsinanyoftheotherfour.Believeme,theywouldhavetraded.

           TherewasneveratimeduringmyyearsasblocksuperintendentwhenallsixcellswereoccupiedatonetimethankGodforsmallfavors.Fourwasthemost,mixedblackandwhite(atColdMountain,therewasnosegregationamongthewalkingdead),andthatwasalittlepieceofhell.Onewasawoman,BeverlyMcCall.Shewasblackastheaceofspadesandasbeautifulasthesinyouneverhadnerveenoughtocommit.Sheputupwithsixyearsofherhusbandbeatingher,butwouldn’tputupwithhiscreepingaroundforasingleday.Ontheeveningaftershefoundouthewascheating,shestoodwaitingfortheunfortunateLesterMcCall,knowntohispals(and,presumably,tohisextremelyshort-termmistress)asCutter,atthetopofthestairsleadingtotheapartmentoverhisbarbershop.
