Themostmercifulthingintheworld,Ithink,istheinabilityofthehumanmindtocorrelateallitscontents.Weliveonaplacidislandofignoranceinthemidstofblackseasofinfinity,anditwasnotmeantthatweshouldvoyagefar.Thesciences,eachstraininginitsowndirection,havehithertoharmeduslittle;butsomedaythepiecingtogetherofdissociatedknowledgewillopenupsuchterrifyingvistasofreality,andofourfrightfulpositiontherein,thatweshalleithergomadfromtherevelationorfleefromthedeadlylightintothepeaceandsafetyofanewdarkage.

Theosophistshaveguessedattheawesomegrandeurofthecosmiccyclewhereinourworldandhumanraceformtransientincidents.Theyhavehintedatstrangesurvivalsintermswhichwouldfreezethebloodifnotmaskedbyablandoptimism.ButitisnotfromthemthattherecamethesingleglimpseofforbiddenaeonswhichchillsmewhenIthinkofitandmaddensmewhenIdreamofit.Thatglimpse,likealldreadglimpsesoftruth,flashedoutfromanaccidentalpiecingtogetherofseparatedthingsinthiscaseanoldnewspaperitemandthenotesofadeadprofessor.Ihopethatnooneelsewillaccomplishthispiecingout;certainly,ifIlive,Ishallneverknowinglysupplyalinkinsohideousachain.
