Duringthegeologicalepochstheoceanoriginallyprevailedeverywhere.Thenbydegrees,inthesilurianperiod,thetopsofthemountainsbegantoappear,theislandsemerged,thendisappearedinpartialdeluges,reappeared,becamesettled,formedcontinents,tillatlengththeearthbecamegeographicallyarranged,asweseeinthepresentday.Thesolidhadwrestedfromtheliquidthirty-sevenmillionsixhundredandfifty-sevensquaremiles,equaltotwelvebillionsninehundredandsixtymillionsofacres.
Theshapeofcontinentsallowsustodividethewatersintofivegreatportions:theArcticorFrozenOcean,theAntarctic,orFrozenOcean,theIndian,theAtlantic,andthePacificOceans.
ThePacificOceanextendsfromnorthtosouthbetweenthetwoPolarCircles,andfromeasttowestbetweenAsiaandAmerica,overanextentof145degreesoflongitude.Itisthequietestofseas;itscurrentsarebroadandslow,ithasmediumtides,andabundantrain.Suchwastheoceanthatmyfatedestinedmefirsttotraveloverunderthesestrangeconditions.
