DumbledorebeckonedHarrytotheveryedgeoftherockwhereaseriesofjaggednichesmadefootholdsleadingdowntobouldersthatlayhalf-submergedinwaterandclosertothecliff.ItwasatreacherousdescentandDumbledore,hamperedslightlybyhiswitheredhand,movedslowly.Thelowerrockswereslipperywithseawater.Harrycouldfeelflecksofcoldsaltsprayhittinghisface.
"Lumos,"saidDumbledore,ashereachedtheboulderclosesttothecliffface.Athousandflecksofgoldenlightsparkleduponthedarksurfaceofthewaterafewfeetbelowwherehecrouched;theblackwallofrockbesidehimwasilluminatedtoo.
"Yousee?"saidDumbledorequietly,holdinghiswandalittlehigher.Harrysawafissureinthecliffintowhichdarkwaterwasswirling.
"Youwillnotobjecttogettingalittlewet?"
"No,"saidHarry.
"ThentakeoffyourInvisibilityCloak—thereisnoneedforitnow—andletustaketheplunge."
Andwiththesuddenagilityofamuchyoungerman,Dumbledoreslidfromtheboulder,landedinthesea,andbegantoswim,withaperfectbreaststroke,towardthedarkslitintherockface,hislitwandheldinhisteeth.Harrypulledoffhiscloak,stuffeditintohispocket,andfollowed.
Thewaterwasicy;Harry’swaterloggedclothesbillowedaroundhimandweighedhimdown.Takingdeepbreathsthatfilledhisnostrilswiththetangofsaltandseaweed,hestruckoutfortheshimmering,shrinkinglightnowmovingdeeperintothecliff.
