Accordingly,weallsetoutfromPampeluna,withourguide,onthe15thofNovember; and,indeed,Iwassurprisedwhen,insteadofgoingforward,hecamedirectlybackwithusonthesameroadthatwecamefromMadrid,abovetwentymiles; whenbeingpassedtworivers,andcomeintotheplaincountry,wefoundourselvesinawarmclimateagain,wherethecountrywaspleasant,andnosnowtobeseen; butonasudden,turningtohisleft,heapproachedthemountainsanotherway; andthoughitistruethehillsandprecipiceslookeddreadful,yethemadesomanytours,suchmeanders,andledusbysuchwindingways,thatwewereinsensiblypassedtheheightofthemountainswithoutbeingmuchencumberedwiththesnow;
