Hetoldmetheywereallofthemverycivil,honestmen,andtheywereunderthegreatestdistressimaginable,havingneitherweaponsnorclothes,noranyfood,butatthemercyanddiscretionofthesavages; outofallhopesofeverreturningtotheirowncountry; andthathewassure,ifIwouldundertaketheirrelief,theywouldliveanddiebyme.
Upontheseassurances,Iresolvedtoventuretorelievethem,ifpossible,andtosendtheoldsavageandthisSpaniardovertothemtotreat. Butwhenwehadgottenallthingsinareadinesstogo,theSpaniardhimselfstartedanobjection,whichhadsomuchprudenceinitononehand,andsomuchsincerityontheotherhand,thatIcouldnotbutbeverywellsatisfiedinit,andbyhisadviceputoffthedeliveranceofhiscomradesforatleasthalfayear.
